If you work in After Effects, you know the names Chris and Trish Meyer. Those of you who have read either of the Meyer’s books, (After Effects Apprentice | Creating Motion Graphics) or have participated in one of their hands-on sessions, know that the best way to improve your skills in After Effects is to learn from Chris and Trish Meyer. And your best opportunity to do so is at this year’s motion{u}.
motion{u} takes place Saturday, October 10, 2009 – the day before the motion09 kickoff. Chris and Trish’s full-day, hands-on session is limited to 15 people – which means if you are even thinking about improving your After Effects skills – you should sign up quickly!
The cost for this training is only $249. Groups of three or more from the same organization can attend for $229 each (please contact us at for details). To fully participate, we recommend you bring a laptop with the latest version of After Effects installed. If you don’t have After Effects installed on your machine, you can download a 30-day trial from Adobe’s website prior to motion09.
Recently, Rob Houghton, principal of motion graphics design firm Houghton Media asked…
I would love to go to motion09 this year, but need to keep the cost below $2500. Do you have any cost-saving resources so I can attend motion09?
This year we worked hard to provide options for attendees to attend at the lowest possible cost. Here are some ways to keep your costs down:
• purchase an {e}ticket for $399. This is our no-frills pass which includes 4-days of amazing content. The sessions included in both the {m}ticket and the {e}ticket are identical!
• by taking advantage of our group rate, you can stay at the ABQ Doubletree for $119 a night (regularly $175 and up). To lower hotel costs even more, share a room.
• go to southwest.com and download their Ding application. Then watch for specials to ABQ. Rob, it looks like you are in the Portland area? Looking on southwest.com – you can travel to ABQ for $99 each way!
$399 – conference
$119 x 5 = $595 – hotel
$198 – airfare
Total $1192*. I don’t think you could attend any conference for less than that!
We look forward to meeting you at motion09!
*prices do not include tax. flights on Southwest start at $49 one way. with pricing like this, you’d be silly not to attend!
Congratulations to Alex Lindsay on his latest feature. 9 months in production…it’s a healthy baby girl! 8lb 8 ounces Isabella Iman Lindsay, is happy, healthy – and already being Twittered about by many.
motion congratulates Alex, his wife Carrletta, and son Malakhi on their newest family member! We wish you tons of happiness.

Recently, Gridiron Software officially launched Flow – a visual workflow manager.
So why am I excited about this new app? First of all – because it is freakin’ cool. Originally designed as a workflow organization tool for motion graphics, once people got a glimpse of what this innovative application could do – everyone wanted to use it.
Because of this, the app was revamped to include workflows for many more disciplines – from design and illustration, to web and video.

The ‘rock stars’ of the industry – the stars of motion09. Once a year, the top animators, motion graphics artists, title designers, visual effects (VFX) artists and broadcast designers come together to share their skills, work, and professional insights. motion09 is an event that inspires.
To ensure the ultimate experience, we limit motion to 360 participants – creating a ‘full-circle of inspiration.’ Now, you have the opportunity to be one of the select 360.
We’re going to have a little scavenger hunt. All you need to do, is complete these steps…
1. Follow @motion09 on Twitter – we’ll follow you back!
2. Look for a message @motion09 Tweeted on 06.18.09 about this contest. When you find it, re-tweet it.
3. Find two ‘rock stars’ who will be speaking at motion09 on Twitter. Get their Twitter IDs and follow them.
4. After you find two of the ‘rock stars’ tweet a message to your followers. The message can say anything you want… but must include:
@motion09
@rock-star1 (replace this with their actual Twitter ID)
@rock-star2 (replace this with their actual Twitter ID)
#animation
#motiongraphics
#vfx
That will leave you with approximately 75-80 characters to play with. Creativity is encouraged…and will be rewarded!
5. Each Tweet you send is considered an entry. We’ll be able to track who’s entered through the @motion09 tag. You can enter once a day – until the contest ends. But…each Tweet you send must be different. Each Tweet has to contain all of the tags listed in step 4, but your messages need to be . . . creatively unique!
…an {m}ticket! This is our full-conference-with-all-the-frills ticket… check it out. It’s a $699 value!
motion is all about creativity . . . so your creativity’s going to weigh in big! Here’s how the point system will work:
- one point for following us on Twitter
– one point for re-tweeting our Tweet announcing this contest
– one point each for up to two motion09 ‘rock-stars’ you find on Twitter
Additionally, each of your Tweets will be ranked by the motion team as follows:
- 5 points: that was amazingly creative!
– 3 points: there’s definitely potential here.
– 1 points: zzzzzzzzzzzzzz…are you talking to me?
The points are added up, and the one with the most points by midnight on the 4th of July – wins!
Oh yeah -– the winner will be announced by @motion09 on Twitter, Sunday, July 5th at noon (MDT | GMT-6). The winner will have 48 hours to claim their prize by Tweeting the following:
“I won an {m}ticket on #motion.tv for being ‘the most creative’! I’ll be attending @motion09 in ABQ, NM October 11-14. See you there!”
*the small print: by participating in this contest, you are agreeing to the following:
– any decisions made by the motion team are final
– motion will not be liable for anything – after all, this is just a game
and…if you are the winner, motion will be writing an article about you!
Planning to attend motion09? Make it a vacation! We’ll show you how to experience the southwest on a budget. Check it out…
motion09 takes place October 11-14 in Albuquerque, NM. It’s the best time of year in the southwest! ABQ is a mile-high in elevation, so you can expect cool crisp nights and mornings – that warm to afternoons in the low 70’s. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s almost guaranteed.
No better way to experience the traditional southwest than in historic Santa Fe. When city officials called it ‘The City Different’ early last century, they got it exactly right. For rarely does a place speak to so many people on so many levels. Whether you’re an art lover, history lover, food lover, or opera lover – Santa Fe is a place you can’t resist.
New to the ABQ | Santa Fe area, is the New Mexico Rail Runner Express. We are really excited about this beautiful new train. It runs North/South down the center of ABQ, and is a great way to get around. But the best part – it’s your ticket to Santa Fe. You’ll catch the NM Rail Runner Express, just .4 of a mile from where motion09 takes place at the Doubletree Hotel in downtown ABQ. With 5-7 trains a day to Santa Fe, you have several options to choose from. The cost? Only $7 one-way or $9 for the day!
Want a motion09 day in Santa Fe? If enough people are interested, we’ll put together a group event for Saturday, October 10, 2009 in Santa Fe. We’ll even arrange for some special showings at a couple of galleries that are of special interest to animators, motion graphic and vfx artists. Sound interesting? Be sure an send us an email . . . we’ll make it happen!
motion09 starts on the last day of the ABQ International Balloon Fiesta. Kodak has named this event the most photographed in the world. With over 700 hot-air balloons, it’s a sight to behold. Come a few days early and spend time at Balloon Fiesta Park, or just get up early Sunday morning before the motion09 kickoff to attend the final Mass Ascension. It’s amazing! Cost to attend the Balloon Fiesta? Just $6/person or $25 for a pack of 5 tickets!
What’s the easiest way to get to the Balloon Fiesta? Take the Rail Runner Express! They’re offering a special deal – purchase your tickets in advance, and for $10 you can ride the Rail Runner and get admission to the Balloon Fiesta! You will board the Rail Runner, just .4 of a mile from the motion09 venue. From there, you will ride the Rail Runner and exit at the Los Ranchos/Journal Center Station. Then, you will catch a shuttle that will take you directly to Balloon Fiesta Park. How easy could it get!
There are numerous other attractions around ABQ – and if you have more time – throughout the state. Check out some of our suggestions on the motion09 website. Want even more information? We’ve put together a great little package showing you how you can turn your experience at motion09 into a vacation. To request this package, send us an email at ! We look forward to seeing you this fall at motion09. Make it a vacation!
We’re pleased to announce registration for motion09 is now open. Visit motion09 details.
